Little Bit of a Rant

I’ve been told by some people in the book industry to make changes to my novel to give it a broader appeal. They probably know more about writing than I do. But, today, a young lady, who happens to be a relative, posted an excerpt on Facebook from a novel she is reading. I looked up the title and it is described as sexy, breathtaking sequel to the #1 bestsellers…(I won’t give away the rest because I don’t want to insult anyone). The writing is awful, in my opinion. So, I’m not trying to say I’m F. Scott Fitzgerald…far from it. But as cool as it would be to have a best-selling novel, if it meant that I had to “dumb-down” my prose in order for it to sell, I don’t think I’d do it. It would be tempting, but I would rather be proud of my work and have no one read it than be embarrassed knowing it was being read by millions. Again, not trying to sound pedantic or superior here, but it’s how I feel. If you would like to see for yourself if my writing is worthy of this proud (egotistical?) missive, you can pick up a copy of Him here.
