The morning was bright, unusually warm, and sunny. Ted had secretly hoped for rain, to delay the tryout and give him another week of practice, but there was no chance of that.
No one spoke much during breakfast, especially not Ted. Ted’s mom and dad decided not to go to the tryout because they didn’t want to make too big of a deal out of it. Gary was going to take him and stay for the whole thing.
Ted called Christina and asked her what time she was coming over to the field and she told him she’d be there at about fifteen minutes until one. Ted agreed that was a good time to arrive.
“Here goes, huh?” she said.
Ted let out a nervous sigh. “Here goes.”
